13 Feb 2024 Bujumbura (Burundi) Iwacu. President Evariste Ndayishimiye meets with a United Nations (UN) delegation comprising special envoy of the secretary general for the Great Lakes region Huang Xia and special representative of the secretary general in Central Africa, Abdou Abarry, to discuss insecurity in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo and tensions with Rwanda;

13 Feb 2024 Djibouti (Djibouti) Arab News. International Islamic Trade Finance Corp. signs a $90m Murabah agreement with Djibouti to secure energy supply through the import of petroleum products;

13 Feb 2024 Kinshasa (DRC) The East African. United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) condemns a bomb explosion in the Zaina refugee camp on 11 February that killed several people and injured others;

13 Feb 2024 Addis Ababa (Ethiopia) Al Jazeera. Ethiopian Human Rights Commission (EHRC) says federal security forces killed at least 45 civilians in a massacre in Amhara state in late January;

13 Feb 2024 Dar es Salaam (Tanzania) The Citizen. President Samia Suluhu Hassan arrives in Norway for a diplomatic visit, the first Tanzanian state visit to Norway since 1976;

12 Feb 2024 Djibouti (Djibouti) Arab News. President Ismail Omar Guelleh says that Djibouti is committed to ensuring maritime security in the Red Sea and is working with partners including the United States, France, United Kingdom and Saudi Arabia;

12 Feb 2024 Addis Ababa (Ethiopia) Tech Cabal. National Bank of Egypt (NBE) (central bank) reports inflation increased to 28.7% in December from 28.3% in November 2023

12 Feb 2024 Nairobi (Kenya) The East Africa. Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (Epra) data show Kenya’s electricity imports from Uganda increased 18.4% driven by larger demand;

12 Feb 2024 Nairobi (Kenya) Star. President William Ruto holds talks with his Rwandan counterpart, Paul Kagame, on the side lines of the World Governments Summit in the United Arab Emirates;

12 Feb 2024 Kigali (Rwanda) News24. A United Nations report states that Rwanda is using sophisticated weaponry such as surface-to-air missiles in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) as a way to support the M23 rebels;

12 Feb 2024 Dar es Salaam (Tanzania) Daily News. President Samia Suluhu Hassan will meet with Pope Francis during her visit to the Vatican City commencing today;

12 Feb 2024 Dar es Salaam (Tanzania) The East African. Tanzania is reportedly courting Ugandan businesses to utilise the port of Dar es Salaam by offering incentives, including 30 days’ free storage for all imports and a dedicated goods shed at the port;

12 Feb 2024 London (United Kingdom) Financial Times. A cross-party parliamentary committee warns that the UK’s Rwanda asylum bill is “fundamentally incompatible” with the UK’s human rights obligations;

11 Feb 2024 Kinshasa (DRC) AFP. A cabinet document reveals that the government intends to end a two-year moratorium on capital punishment for soldiers found guilty of treason amid escalating violence with the M23 rebel group;

11 Feb 2024 Addis Ababa (Ethiopia) New Times. Ethiopia and Rwanda’s 3rd Joint Ministerial Commission meeting results in the signing of various new cooperation agreements in a bid to strengthen ties;

11 Feb 2024 Kampala (Uganda) Business Insider Africa. Uganda Revenue Authority (URA) implements stricter measures around the export of gold, insisting that only exports with a proof of clearance of all payments will be allowed;

10 Feb 2024 Djibouti (Djibouti) Sudan Tribune. President Ismail Guelleh dispatches a special envoy to Sudan in a bid to persuade Sudan’s de facto leader, Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, to reverse his decision to suspend Sudan’s membership of the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD);

10 Feb 2024 Nairobi (Kenya) Daily Nation. Government and Japan-headquartered Toyota sign a framework agreement for collaboration in vehicle manufacturing and renewable energy development;

8 Feb 2024 Kinshasa (DRC) AFP. Thousands continue to flee violence as fighting intensifies around Goma, the capital of North Kivu Province, with rebels surrounding the strategic town of Sake which will impact the logistics flow to Congolese armed forces;

8 Feb 2024 Addis Ababa (Ethiopia) ENCA. Parliament approves the appointment of National Intelligence and Security Service (NISS) chief Temesen Tiruneh as deputy prime minister, with national security advisor Redwan Hussein replacing Tiruneh as NISS head;

8 Feb 2024 Dar es Salaam (Tanzania) Bloomberg. China has presented a plan to spend more than $1 billion refurbishing a key railway connecting Zambia’s copper heartland with the Indian Ocean port of Dar es Salaam in neighbouring Tanzania;
