6 Dec 2023 Djibouti (Djibouti) Freight News. Ethio-Djibouti Railway Share Company (EDR) reports significant annual growth of close to 45% in its capacity for cargo and passenger transportation;

6 Dec 2023 Dar es Salaam (Tanzania) The Citizen. President Samia Suluhu Hassan signs into law the Universal Health Insurance Bill, paving the way for the health ministry to start formulating regulations and implementing the law;

6 Dec 2023 Kampala (Uganda) Reuters. Government denounces the United States (US) decision to expand visa restrictions against its officials, accusing the US of pushing an “LGBT agenda” in Africa;

5 Dec 2023 Bujumbura (Burundi) The Standard. The 23rd East African Community’s (EAC) micro, small and medium enterprises trade fair starts in Burundi, attracting more than 1,500 firms from the EAC member states;

5 Dec 2023 Nairobi (Kenya) Reuters. Stanbic Bank Kenya Purchasing Managers’ Index (PMI) falls to 45.8 in November from 46.2 in October, signalling a third straight month of contraction of private sector activity;

5 Dec 2023 Nairobi (Kenya) The East African. Kenyan high court suspends the sale of 11 state-owned entities after opposition leader Raila Odinga’s party, Orange Democratic Movement (ODM), challenged the decision;

5 Dec 2023 Nairobi (Kenya) Anadolu Agency. India’s prime minister, Narendra Modi, says India will provide a $250m financial credit line to Kenya for the modernisation of its agriculture sector;

5 Dec 2023 Kigali (Rwanda) Financial Times. United Kingdom home secretary James Cleverly signs a new asylum deal with Rwanda to help revive the UK’s plan to send migrants to Rwanda;

5 Dec 2023 Kigali (Rwanda) KT Press. Prime minister Édouard Ngirente says the national strategy for transformation has set a goal for the mining sector to contribute $1.5 billion by 2024;

5 Dec 2023 Hanang (Tanzania) The Citizen. President Samia Suluhu Hassan returns early from COP28 after the death toll from flash floods in Hanang continues to rise, to at least 68;

5 Dec 2023 Dar es Salaam (Tanzania) Daily News. World Bank president Ajay Banga arrives in Tanzania with high-level discussions scheduled with President Samia Suluhu Hassan, Zanzibar’s President Hussein Mwinyi and various government ministers and officials;

5 Dec 2023 Kampala (Uganda) Reuters. Finance ministry says Uganda is planning to more than double its domestic borrowing in the 2023/2024 financial year to $1.79 billion to help finance spending needs following the World Bank’s lending cut earlier this year to protest the enactment of the Anti-Homosexuality Bill 2023;

4 Dec 2023 Djibouti (Djibouti) The East African. Intergovernmental Authority on Development (Igad) announces it will host a heads of state and government summit in Djibouti on 9 December to discuss the ongoing conflict in Sudan;

4 Dec 2023 Kinshasa (DRC) Africanews. Opposition candidate Delly Sesanga becomes the fourth opposition candidate to withdraw from the 20 December presidential election in favour of former Katanga governor Moïse Katumbi;

4 Dec 2023 Nairobi (Kenya) Business Insider Africa. Kenya signs seven green project agreements worth $4.48 billion during COP28 including for a geothermal generation plant, fertiliser production and a renewable energy-powered data centre;

4 Dec 2023 Dar es Salaam (Tanzania) The East African. African Court on Human Rights and Peoples Rights (ACPHR) names Tanzania and Kenya among member states that have failed to implement its decisions;

4 Dec 2023 Kampala (Uganda) Reuters. United States expands a visa restriction policy on Ugandan officials to include those it believes are responsible for undermining democracy and repressing marginalised groups;

3 Dec 2023 Djibouti (Djibouti) The Peninsular. Djibouti and Qatar discuss elevating legal cooperation through agreements and memoranda of understanding;

3 Dec 2023 Kinshasa (DRC) Africanews. The East African Community Regional Force (EAC-RF) begins withdrawing from DRC, with the first 100 Kenyan military personnel leaving;

3 Dec 2023 Addis Ababa (Ethiopia) Reuters. Ethiopia signs an agreement with United Arab Emirates (UAE)-headquartered AMEA Power for the construction of a 300MW wind farm worth $600m;

2 Dec 2023 Nairobi (Kenya) Bloomberg. President William Ruto says the government is considering selling sovereign green bonds and a debt-for-nature swap to help fund climate projects;

2 Dec 2023 Dar es Salaam (Tanzania) The Citizen. Tanzania Electric Supply Company (Tanesco) confirms it has started connecting the Julius Nyerere Hydropower Plant (JNHPP) to the national grid and has begun trials;

1 Dec 2023 Dar es Salaam (Tanzania) Daily News. Industry and trade minister Dr Ashatu Kijaji confirms that 18 companies have managed to access and sell products under the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) market this year, above the government’s target of 10 companies;

30 Nov 2023 Addis Ababa (Ethiopia) Africa Business. National Bank of Ethiopia (NBE) (central bank) governor Mamo Mihretu confirms Ethiopia has secured a $1.5 billion debt relief agreement with creditors;

30 Nov 2023 Arusha (Tanzania) Business Insider Africa. A regional court dismisses a case lodged by South Africa-headquartered Natural Justice against the East African Crude Oil Pipeline (EACOP) citing that the case is not within its jurisdiction and was lodged too late;

29 Nov 2023 Nairobi (Kenya) The Africa Report. Opposition leader Raila Odinga says his coalition Azimio la Umoja has approved the final report from the National Dialogue Committee but says there are still reservations as key issues such as high cost of living were not addressed;
