6 Sep 2023 Kinshasa (DRC) Anadolu Agency. Leaders of the East African Community (EAC), namely Burundi, Kenya, Tanzania, Rwanda and South Sudan and representatives from the DRC and Uganda meet at the 22nd Extra-Ordinating Summit of the East African Community Heads of State and unanimously vote to extend the mandate of its regional force, the East African Community Regional Force (EACRF), in eastern DRC;

6 Sep 2023 Shinyanga (Tanzania) Daily News. Isaka Dry Port registers a 30% cargo volume increase over the last four months as suppliers for the East African Crude Oil Pipeline (EACOP), which will run through Uganda and Tanzania, move cargo through the port;

5 Sep 2023 Bujumbura (Burundi) North Africa Post. Global rights groups including the Committee To Protect Journalists (CPJ), United Kingdom-headquartered Amnesty International and United States-headquartered Human Rights Watch, renew calls for the release of Burundian journalist and government critic Floriane Irangabiye. The National Intelligence Services arrested Irangabiye in January for undermining the integrity of the national territory and was sentenced to ten years in prison;

5 Sep 2023 Addis Ababa (Ethiopia) Al Jazeera. United Kingdom-headquartered Amnesty International releases a report detailing that Eritrean soldiers who allied with Ethiopian government forces during the Tigray conflict committed war crimes and possible crimes against humanity. The report also says that the atrocities continued after the government and Tigray People’s Liberation Front signed a cessation of hostilities agreement;

5 Sep 2023 Dar es Salaam (Tanzania) The Citizen. Court of appeal rejects an appeal by Total Tanzania Limited, a local subsidiary of French-headquartered TotalEnergies, which has been challenging a TSh 436.4m ($177,858) tax liability for imported aviation fuel through various legal battles over the past six years;

5 Sep 2023 Kampala (Uganda) Anadolu Agency. Police confirm they have recovered six improvised bombs in two days after the man police arrested on Sunday, who attempted to enter a church with a bomb, revealed a terror plot involving six other terrorists;

4 Sep 2023 Nairobi (Kenya) Reuters. Stanbic Bank Kenya’s latest Purchasing Managers Index (PMI) rises from 45.5 in July to 50.6 in August, indicating that private sector activity expanded in August, ending a six-month streak of scores below 50;

4 Sep 2023 Nairobi (Kenya) AFP. Kenya hosts the first Africa Climate Summit with President William Ruto noting the summit will help deliver African solutions ahead of the November United Nations COP28 climate summit;

4 Sep 2023 Dar es Salaam (Tanzania) Arab News. President Samia Suluhu Hassan affirms her and Tanzania’s support for Saudi Arabia’s bid to host the Expo 2030 in Riyadh while also praising the first Saudi-African Summit and the 5th Arab-African Summit, to be held in Saudi Arabia later this year;

3 Sep 2023 Bujumbura (Burundi) Captial FM. President Évariste Ndayishimiye arrives in Kenya to attend the Africa Climate Summit and will meet with fellow East African leaders during the summit;

3 Sep 2023 Kampala (Uganda) Reuters. Police confirm they have detained a man who entered a church with an explosive device and are searching for three others also believed to be on similar bombing missions in Uganda;

2 Sep 2023 Kinshasa (DRC) Acutalite. European Commissioner for justice Didier Reynders is set to arrive in DRC to discuss cooperation between DRC and Belgium, security in eastern DRC and the upcoming December presidential elections;

2 Sep 2023 Khartoum (Sudan) Anadolu Agency. General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan orders the re-opening of border crossings with Eritrea to allow for movement of people and goods and resumption of commercial activities;

2 Sep 2023 Nairobi (Kenya) Africanews. President William Ruto announces plans to roll out electric motorbikes across the country in collaboration with startup Spiro just days before Kenya hosts the first Africa Climate Summit;

1 Sep 2023 Asmara (Eritrea) AfDB. President Isaias Afwerki meets with African Development Bank president Akinwumi Adesina to discuss strengthening their partnership;

1 Sep 2023 Amhara (Ethiopia) Borkena. Amhara regional state officials announce new appointments to the security structure as conflict continues between Fano militia and the Ethiopian Defence Force in the region;

1 Sep 2023 Kigali (Rwanda) African Business. World Bank appoints Sahr Kpundeh as the new country manager for Rwanda;

1 Sep 2023 Kigali (Rwanda) The East African. President Paul Kagame reshuffles his top military chiefs and retires former defence minister General James Kabarebe;

31 Aug 2023 Nairobi (Kenya) Reuters. Kenya National Bureau of Statistics reports that annual inflation slowed to 6.7% in August from 7.3% in July, driven by a fall in food prices
