18 Apr 2023 Kinshasa (DRC) La Prosperité. President Félix Antoine Tshisekedi Tshilombo organises the first meeting of the national framework for consultation of mining sector stakeholders;18 Apr 2023 Addis Ababa (Ethiopia) Borkena. Amhara Regional State industry and investment bureau says power supply problems in the region are hampering regional industries’ productive capacity;18 Apr 2023 Victoria (Seychelles) Seychelles News Agency. Finance ministry secretary of state Patrick Payet reports that Fitch Ratings’ 2023 credit rating, based on conversations with the ministry, the Central Bank of Seychelles (CBS), and the private sector, including the banking and tourism sectors and which remains at ‘BB-‘ with a stable outlook, will benefit the country as a whole;18 Apr 2023 Khartoum (Sudan) CNN Business. Fighting between Sudan’s armed forces and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) is in its fourth day in Khartoum near the army command and the presidential palace, and close to two RSF bases to the north and west of the capital;18 Apr 2023 Dar es Salaam (Tanzania) The Citizen. The government signs a framework agreement worth $667m with three mining firms in a landmark development that will see Tanzania surpass its target of mining contributing at least 10% of the economy;17 Apr 2023 Nairobi (Kenya) Africanews. United States (US)-headquartered spacecraft manufacturer SpaceX launches a rocket from California (US) and puts Kenya’s first operational satellite into orbit;17 Apr 2023 Dar es Salaam (Tanzania) Reuters. Tanzania government signs agreements worth $667m with three Australian companies, Evolution Energy Minerals, Ecograf Ltd and Peak Rare Earths, to mine rare earth minerals and graphite, part of President Samia Suluhu Hassan‘s drive to fast-track negotiations on long-pending mining and energy projects;17 Apr 2023 Kampala (Uganda) Independent. State finance minister in charge of planning, Amos Lugoloobi, pleads not guilty to corruption-related charges in a scandal stemming from the diversion of roofing sheets that should have been distributed to vulnerable people;16 Apr 2023 Addis Ababa (Ethiopia) Borkena. Ethiopian Human Rights Commission (EHRC) calls for the unconditional release of suspects who were arrested for crimes allegedly committed by means of mass media and asks government security forces to refrain from arresting leaders and followers of political parties, media personnel and activists;16 Apr 2023 Mogadishu (Somalia) The East African. South Sudan and Somalia lobby for lifting of United Nations arms embargo ahead of the May review of the embargo on South Sudan;16 Apr 2023 Dar es Salaam (Tanzania) The Citizen. International Monetary Fund (IMF) predicts that Tanzania’s economy, now at $85.4 billion, will grow into a $136-billion economy by 2028, overtaking Kenya as East Africa‘s largest economy, currently its largest at $118.1 billion and predicted to grow to a $151-billion economy by 2028;14 Apr 2023 Kinshasa (DRC) La Prosperité. President Félix Antoine Tshisekedi Tshilombo welcomes Swiss Confederation president Alain Berset at the Palais de la Nation;13 Apr 2023 Addis Ababa (Ethiopia) Borkena. Ethiopian Human Rights Commission (EHRC) say deaths and physical injuries occurred as a result of attacks against protestors in Amhara following the government’s decision to reorganise the Special Force of the region;13 Apr 2023 Dar es Salaam (Tanzania) The Citizen. Tanzania Police Force is holding 63 illegal immigrants from Ethiopia who were seized in Njombe region, with about 40 others said to be on the run, after they snuck into Tanzania via Nairobi (Kenya) and Mombasa (Kenya) on their way to South Africa;12 Apr 2023 Kinshasa (DRC) news24. United Nations reports M23 rebels committed a massacre of more than 170 civilians in the village of Kishishe in eastern DRC;12 Apr 2023 Kinshasa (DRC) Al Jazeera. United Nations Children’s Agency (UNICEF) reports that the conflict in the DRC’s volatile eastern region has disrupted schooling for 750,000 young Congolese;12 Apr 2023 Addis Ababa (Ethiopia) Reuters. Businesses reopen and traffic is back to normal patterns in urban centres of Amhara region after six days of violent protests over a planned shake-up of local forces;12 Apr 2023 Nairobi (Kenya) Bloomberg. Government fails to pay civil servants’ March salaries on time, as domestic debt and a high public wage bill add pressure to country’s finances;12 Apr 2023 Victoria (Seychelles) Seychelles News Agency. President Wavel Ramkalawan receives a formal invitation from United Arab Emirates president Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan for the 28th Session of the Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC ) at Expo City, Dubai, in November;
