13 Aug 2024 Kinshasa (DRC) Bloomberg. International nongovernmental organisation Save The Children says already overcrowded hospitals are struggling as an mpox outbreak pushes their capacity;

13 Aug 2024 Addis Ababa (Ethiopia) Reuters. Turkey’s foreign minister, Hakan Fidan, says the second round of mediated talks between Ethiopia and Somalia in Turkey ended without a deal but that progress was made;

13 Aug 2024 Mbeya (Tanzania) The Citizen. Police in the Mbeya region have granted bail to detained opposition Chadema party leaders, including national chairman Freeman Mbowe, along with cadres and supporters, following interrogations;

13 Aug 2024 Kampala (Uganda) Al Jazeera. Gulu high court finds Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA) commander Thomas Kwoyelo guilty of 44 offences, including crimes against humanity;

13 Aug 2024 Lusaka (Zambia) Reuters. Democratic Republic of Congo’s (DRC) trade ministry confirms that Zambia will reopen its recently closed border with DRC today;

12 Aug 2024 Nairobi (Kenya) CNBC Africa. Finance minister John Mbadi says he will work to reduce the government’s bloated payroll and carry out tax reforms in a bid to address the country’s growing budget deficit;

12 Aug 2024 Addis Ababa (Ethiopia) Anadolu Agency. An Ethiopian and Somalian delegation will meet in Türkiye today in a bid to ease tensions over Ethiopia’s Red Sea deal with Somaliland;

12 Aug 2024 Nairobi (Kenya) Business Daily. Competition Authority of Kenya (CAK) says United Arab Emirates-based B Commodities ME has committed to retaining 10,120 employees of Lipton Teas and Infusions Kenya and Limuru Tea as it acquires controlling stakes in the two companies;

12 Aug 2024 Dar es Salaam (Tanzania) The Citizen. Police detain 61 people, including opposition Chadema deputy chairman Tundu Lissu, who were planning to commemorate International Youth Day, stating that the party had displayed signs of threatening public peace;

11 Aug 2024 Kigali (Rwanda) AFP. President Paul Kagame is sworn in for a fourth term;

11 Aug 2024 Lusaka (Zambia) Diggers. Commerce, trade and industry minister Chipoka Mulenga announces the temporary closure of all three of Zambia’s functional border gates with the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) due to protests taking place in DRC;

9 Aug 2024 Bujumbura (Burundi) Arab News. Survivors and relatives of a 2004 massacre of Tutsi refugees in Burundi file legal cases in Burundi, Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and Rwanda, claiming genocide and crimes against humanity;

9 Aug 2024 Asmara (Eritrea) Asharq Al-Awsat. Foreign minister Osman Saleh meets with Egypt’s President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi to discuss coordination at various levels to face threats in the Horn of Africa and Red Sea to support regional security and stability;

8 Aug 2024 Djibouti (Djibouti) Arab News. Saudi Arabia and Djibouti confirm plans to establish a new maritime initiative aimed at strengthening trade and economic ties;

8 Aug 2024 Kinshasa (DRC) APA News. United States grants DRC $424m in humanitarian aid;

8 Aug 2024 Nairobi (Kenya) Reuters. Police fire tear gas at anti-government protestors in Nairobi;

8 Aug 2024 Kigali (Rwanda) France24. Regulators shut down more than 8,000 churches and mosques for failing to meet health and safety standards;

8 Aug 2024 Dar es Salaam (Tanzania) The Citizen. The African Development Bank (AfDB) in its 2024 Country Focus Report, highlights the urgent need for Tanzania to address its development financing challenges by focusing on global financial reforms, including enhancing stability, accessibility and reducing volatility in finance and markets;

7 Aug 2024 Djibouti (Djibouti) Bloomberg. Egypt and Djibouti offer support to a new African Union peacekeeping mission in Somalia that will replace a similar force retiring at the end of this year;

7 Aug 2024 Kampala (Uganda) CNBC Africa. Bank of Uganda (central bank) cuts its key lending rate by 25 basis points to 10%, stating the shilling has recovered and has led to an improvement in the inflation outlook;
