13 Mar 2024 Dar es Salaam (Tanzania) The East African. Agathon Rwasa, leader of Burundi‘s main opposition party, National Freedom Congress (CNL), was controversially removed from his position while on a trip to Dar es Salaam on 10 March;

12 Mar 2024 Addis Ababa (Ethiopia) Africanews. Federal government and representatives from Tigray hold talks on lingering issues regarding the implementation of the November 2022 ceasefire between federal soldiers and the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF);

12 Mar 2024 Nairobi (Kenya) Reuters. Kenya pauses its deployment of 1,000 police officers to Haiti following the resignation of Haiti’s prime minister, Ariel Henry;

12 Mar 2024 Dar es Salaam (Tanzania) World Bank. In its 20th edition of Tanzania Economic Update, the World Bank says the number of Tanzanians living in poverty surged from 14 million in 2018 to 17.3 million in 2023;

12 Mar 2024 Kampala (Uganda) The East African. Equity Bank Uganda, a local subsidiary of Kenya-based Equity Bank, confirms employees are under investigation for an alleged $16m loans fraud;

11 Mar 2024 Luanda (Angola) News24. Angola will host a meeting between Rwanda’s President Paul Kagame and Democratic Republic of Congo’s (DRC) President Felix Tshisekedi to discuss the ongoing security issues in eastern DRC;

11 Mar 2024 Djibouti (Djibouti) AMA. Djibouti’s sovereign wealth fund, Fonds Souverain de Djibouti, announces its upcoming Djibouti Forum – Gateway of Opportunities will take place between 12 and 14 May to showcase potential and investment opportunities in Djibouti;

11 Mar 2024 Nairobi (Kenya) Business Daily. Kenya Power and Lighting Company’s (KPLC) debt to United States (US) energy firm Ormat Technology reaches KSh 4.31 billion ($30.89m) with the US firm warning of financial exposure due to the deteriorating pace of payments by KPLC;

11 Mar 2024 Dar es Salaam (Tanzania) New Times. Foreign affairs and East African cooperation minister January Makamba travels to Rwanda on a bilateral visit accompanied by representatives from the transport, trade and industry, agriculture and energy ministries;

9 Mar 2024 Addis Ababa (Ethiopia) Garowe Online. Ethiopia is reportedly considering withdrawing from its agreement with Somaliland granting it access to the Red Sea over growing pressure from the international community;

9 Mar 2024 Addis Ababa (Ethiopia) ENA. The ruling Prosperity Party (PP) calls for the strengthening of relations and cooperation with Djibouti’s ruling People’s Rally for Progress (RPP);

9 Mar 2024 Kigali (Rwanda) France24. The ruling Rwandan Patriotic Front nominates President Paul Kagame as its presidential candidate for the upcoming July election, when it is widely expected that Kagame will win a fourth seven-year term;

9 Mar 2024 Dar es Salaam (Tanzania) The Citizen. Investors speaking at the Kenyan Diaspora in Tanzania Forum say they are seeking to raise the number of Kenya-backed projects in Tanzania by 100% in coming years;

9 Mar 2024 Dar es Salaam (Tanzania) The East African.  A local water utility, Tanga Urban Water Supply and Sanitation Authority (Tanga UWASA) issues a green bond of TSh 53.12 billion ($20.8m), a first in East Africa by a sub-national entity, in efforts to boost water conservation and access to the critical resource;

8 Mar 2024 Nairobi (Kenya) The East African. International Organisation for Migration (IOM) says Kenya is hosting over one million foreign migrants, with the largest number coming from Somalia, followed by Uganda, South Sudan and Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC);

7 Mar 2024 Kinshasa (DRC) North Africa Post. Local officials report that the M23 rebel group has seized the town of Nyanzale in eastern DRC, killing at least 15 people and displacing thousands in the process;

7 Mar 2024 Addis Ababa (Ethiopia) ENA. Foreign affairs minister Taye Atske Selassie meets with his Danish counterpart, Lars Løkke Rasmussen, to discuss bilateral relations and regional and continental issues of common interest;

7 Mar 2024 Maputo (Mozambique) The Africa Report. Parliament ratifies an extradition treaty with Rwanda despite fears that Rwanda will use it to persecute exiled dissidents;

7 Mar 2024 Arusha (Tanzania) The Citizen. While addressing the East African Legislative Assembly (EALA) on 5 March, Kenya’s President William Ruto says that East African Community (EAC) leaders will back one candidate for chairmanship of the African Union Commission (AUC), Kenyan opposition leader Raila Odinga;

6 Mar 2024 Kampala (Uganda) IMF. International Monetary Fund (IMF) completes its fifth review of Uganda’s Extended Credit Facility (ECF), allowing for the immediate disbursement of $120m;
