29 Aug 2023 Kinshasa (DRC) Sika Finance. Mines ministry reports that DRC produced approximately 14.82 tonnes of gold during the first half of 2023, an 11% increase year-on-year, while diamond exports declined 38.8% to reach 3.8 million carats;

29 Aug 2023 Kinshasa (DRC) RFI. President Felix Tshisekedi and his Burundian counterpart, Evariste Ndayishimiye, sign a defence and security memorandum of understanding (MoU) concluding a 48-hour visit by Ndayishimiye to DRC;

29 Aug 2023 Addis Ababa (Ethiopia) AFP. United Nations says at least 183 people have been killed since July in clashes between the Ethiopian National Defense Force and Fano militia in the Amhara region, calling for an end to the killings, violence and human rights abuses ongoing in the region;

29 Aug 2023 Addis Ababa (Ethiopia) Borkena. Opposition parties People’s Revolutionary Party (EPRP), All Ethiopian Unity Party (AEUP), Amhara Ghion Movement, One Ethiopia Democratic, and Enat Party criticises the government’s decision to resort to forceful measures to repress popular demands in the Amhara region;

29 Aug 2023 Nairobi (Kenya) Reuters. National carrier Kenya Airways says its pre-tax loss has increased to Ksh 21.7 billion ($149.29m) in the first half of 2023 from Ksh 9.9 billion ($68.11m) in the first half of 2022, as the weaker shilling offsets any improved revenues;

28 Aug 2023 Djibouti (Djibouti) Asahi.com. Japan is reportedly considering providing security aid to six countries in 2024, including Djibouti, citing its geopolitical importance;

28 Aug 2023 Addis Ababa (Ethiopia) AL-Monitor. Ethiopia, Egypt and Sudan resume talks on Ethiopia’s Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) as Egypt seeks a legally binding agreement on how Ethiopia operates and fills the dam;

28 Aug 2023 Kinshasa (DRC) Actualite. Burundi’s President Evariste Ndayishimye, while on a visit to Kinshasa, says the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) linking DRC, Burundi and Tanzania is progressing well;

28 Aug 2023 Nairobi (Kenya) ESI Africa. National Assembly summons two senior energy officials to explain the recent electricity blackout that left most parts of Kenya without power for the weekend;

28 Aug 2023 Juba (Sudan) Sudan Tribune. Finance minister Barnaba Chol Bak confirms that Sudan is in talks to reactivate plans to build an oil pipeline through Kenya, Djibouti, Ethiopia and in Sudan;

28 Aug 2023 Dar es Salaam (Tanzania) The Citizen. President Samia Suluhu Hassan appoints Ali Idi Siwa, formerly Tanzania’s ambassador to Rwanda, as the new director general of the Tanzania Intelligence and Security Services (TISS), less than eight months after appointing Saidi Massoro;

28 Aug 2023 Kampala (Uganda) Africanews. A 20-year-old man becomes the first individual to be indicted on charges of “aggravated homosexuality” under Uganda’s newly enacted anti-LBGTQ law;

27 Aug 2023 Djibouti (Djibouti) Agence Ecofin. Dubai-based AMEA Power signs a 25-year power purchase agreement with the government for a 25-megwatt (MW) solar power project, the first independent power project in Djibouti;

27 Aug 2023 Kigali (Rwanda) Africanews. Rwanda signs a five-year partnership with German football club Bayern Munich to promote tourism in Rwanda, with the ‘Visit Rwanda’ logo to appear on panels around the 75,000-seater Allianz Arena (Munich) as part of the deal;

27 Aug 2023 Dar es Salaam (Tanzania) The Citizen. Chief government spokesperson Gerson Msigwa announces that following the ratification of the inter-governmental agreement between Tanzania and Dubai, both parties have now entered negotiations regarding the implementation contracts for the port project;

26 Aug 2023 Nairobi (Kenya) Daily Nation. Fresh Produce Consortium of Kenya CEO Okisegere Ojepat and Fresh Produce Exporters Association of Kenya CEO Hosea Machuki report that fresh produce exporters have suffered multiple hits from power outages;

25 Aug 2023 Bujumbura (Burundi) AfDB. African Development Bank (AfDB) confirms that renovation of the Port of Bujumbura is underway with funding from the AfDB ($25.28m) and European Union (EU) ($31.33m), with Burundi providing counterpart financing of $2.16m;

25 Aug 2023 Kinshasa (DRC) La Prosperite. The European Union launches a new humanitarian airlift operation to the east of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, to deliver essential supplies to the city of Goma, which will be used to reinforce the humanitarian response in the eastern part of the country, where the already dire situation continues to deteriorate;

24 Aug 2023 Nairobi (Kenya) Daily Nation. National treasury cabinet secretary Njuguna Ndung’u criticises the financial media for talking the economy down, constantly portraying doom and gloom while giving short shrift to positive developments;

24 Aug 2023 Dar es Salaam (Tanzania) Business and Financial Times. President Samia Suluhu Hassan announces the opening of Tanzania’s new consulate in Ghana, having received the approval of Ghana through the foreign affairs and regional integration ministry;

23 Aug 2023 Johannesburg (South Africa) African Business. Eritrea’s President Isaia Afwerki meets Belarus’ foreign affairs minister, Sergei Aleinik, on the side lines of the 15th BRICS Summit to discuss bilateral ties and issues of common interest;

23 Aug 2023 Bujumbura (Burundi) Region Week. President Evariste Ndayishimye leaves Burundi for Johannesburg (South Africa) to attend the 15th BRICS Summit;

23 Aug 2023 Kinshasa (DRC) Africa News. The Constitutional Court begins the trial of former prime minister Augustin Matata Ponyo who is accused of embezzling $205m from the treasury;

23 Aug 2023 Addis Ababa (Ethiopia) Reuters. United States-based non-governmental organisation Human Rights Watch (HRW) publishes a 73-page report accusing Saudi Arabia of killing hundreds of Ethiopian migrants including women and children who attempted to enter Saudi Arabia along the mountain border with Yemen between March 2022 and June 2023;

23 Aug 2023 Nairobi (Kenya) Daily Nation. United States-headquartered American Towers Corporation (ATC) alleges that local firm Telkom Kenya has breached a tower sale and leaseback agreement and owes it KSh 4 billion ($27.61m). Telkom Kenya is leasing 3,600 telecommunication towers from ATC and recently saw ATC switch off its towers in response to the dispute;

23 Aug 2023 Nairobi (Kenya) The Star. Cabinet secretary for information, communications and digital economy Eliud Owalo confirms that government will collaborate with the European Union (EU) and China to advance its policy, legal and regulatory framework on data protection;

23 Aug 2023 Dar es Salaam (Tanzania) Daily News. Indonesia’s President Joko Widodo pledges to increase investments in Tanzania, including in the management of the Mnazi Bay gas block by its state-owned company, and expresses interest in the agricultural sector, an area where Indonesia has extensive experience with agri-technology and mass palm production;
