28 Aug 2024 Dar es Salaam (Tanzania) The Citizen. World Health Organisation (WHO) nominates Tanzania’s former health minister, Dr Faustine Ndugulile, to serve as WHO Africa regional director;

27 Aug 2024 Kinshasa (DRC) Al Jazeera. Mpox response team lead Cris Kacita confirms DRC no longer expects to receive its first delivery of vaccines this week as there are still several processes to follow;

27 Aug 2024 Nairobi (Kenya) CH-Aviation. Kenya Airways CEO Allan Kilavuka says the national carrier is seeking to recover more than $11.6m being withheld in Ethiopia due to foreign exchange restrictions in Ethiopia;

27 Aug 2024 Dar es Salaam (Tanzania) The Citizen. President Samia Suluhu Hassan travels to Nairobi (Kenya) today to join her Kenyan counterpart, William Ruto, in supporting Kenyan opposition leader Raila Odingaʼs campaign for the African Union (AU) Commission chairmanship;

26 Aug 2024 Addis Ababa (Ethiopia) Addis Insight. Ethiopian Electric Power CEO Ashebir Balcha confirms that Ethiopia will begin electricity exports to Tanzania in September;

26 Aug 2024 Nairobi (Kenya) S&P. United States-headquartered credit rating agency S&P downgrades Kenya’s credit rating from B- to B citing a weaker fiscal and debt trajectory;

26 Aug 2024 Nairobi (Kenya) AFP. Police say the Kenya-led security force deployed in Haiti has made significant progress in dealing with gang violence in the country;

26 Aug 2024 Kampala (Uganda) China Global South Project. Police arrest 21 people protesting the East African Crude Oil Pipeline Project (EACOP);

25 Aug 2024 Kinshasa (DRC) Channel Africa. M23 rebel group spokesperson Willy Ngoma says armed forces attacked several rebel positions around Kirumba (North Kivu Province) and that fighting continues;

24 Aug 2024 Djibouti (Djibouti) Daily News Egypt. Egypt and Djibouti discuss ways to strengthen cooperation in the electricity and renewable energy sectors;

24 Aug 2024 Nairobi (Kenya) Garowe. A Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) contingent under the Quick Reaction Force leaves for Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) to join the United Nations Organization Stabilization Mission in the DRC (MONUSCO);

23 Aug 2024 Asmara (Eritrea) Anadolu Agency. Human Rights Concern Eritrea (HRCE) confirms finance minister Berhance Abrehe died in jail after six years of imprisonment, with HRCE stating his death raises concerns about the treatment of political prisoners;

23 Aug 2024 Asmara (Eritrea) Anadolu Agency. Authorities release 31 Yemeni fishermen after holding them for three days in detention;

23 Aug 2024 Kigali (Rwanda) New Times. Rwanda extends its agreement with the Africa Union Commission (AUC) and the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) to host asylum seekers from Libya until 2025;

23 Aug 2024 Dar es Salaam (Tanzania) The Citizen. Minerals minister Antony Mavunde says Tanzania is working on a plan to become Africa’s largest graphite producer and currently stands in third place behind Madagascar and Mozambique;

22 Aug 2024 Bujumbura (Burundi) AFP. Health ministry confirms Burundi has registered 171 cases of mpox of which 137 are still active;

22 Aug 2024 Kinshasa (DRC) Daily Maverick. The first United States (US) shipment of copper from mines in DRC via the Lobito Atlantic Railway has been loaded;

21 Aug 2024 Nairobi (Kenya) BBC. Police say they have charged five police officers after suspected serial killer Collins Jumaisi Khalusha escaped from custody;

21 Aug 2024 Kigali (Rwanda) CNBC Africa. National Bank of Rwanda (central bank) lowers its key interest rate by 50 basis points to 6.5%, saying inflation is expected to remain within its target band of between 2% and 8%;

21 Aug 2024 Dar es Salaam (Tanzania) The Citizen. United States Agency for International Development (USAID) confirms it will invest $8.3m in several Tanzanian companies to boost trade, improve food security and strengthen Tanzania’s export competitiveness;

21 Aug 2024 Arusha (Tanzania) East African Community. East African Community (EAC) secretary general Veronica Mueni Nduva says plans for a single regional currency have been delayed until 2031;

21 Aug 2024 Kampala (Uganda) The Africa Report. Uganda People’s Defence Force says it has destroyed camps belonging to extremist organisation the Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA), in Central African Republic (CAR);
