4 Jan 2023 Kinshasa (DRC) Xinhua. United Nations (UN) appoints lieutenant general Otávio Rodrigues De Miranda Filho of Brazil to be commander of the UN Organization Stabilization Mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (MONUSCO);

4 Jan 2023 Kinshasa (DRC) Journal du Cameroun. A government report claims that President Felix Tshisekedi’s administration has dismantled a Rwandan spy cell active in DRC that allegedly plotted to assassinate the president by targeting his plane;

4 Jan 2023 Nairobi (Kenya) Al Jazeera. Trading of national airline Kenya Airways shares on the Nairobi Stock Exchange (NSE) has been suspended for a further 12 months as the airline strives to return to profitability;

4 Jan 2023 Kampala (Uganda) Dev DiscourseAfrica Centre for Disease Control (Africa CDC) confirms it has been 39 days since the last confirmed case of Ebola in Uganda, noting that the country will be declared Ebola-free on 10 January if there are no further cases reported;

4 Jan 2022 Kampala (Uganda) Zawya. Uganda Revenue Authority (URA) announces that persons earning an income from entertainment activities must register for a tax identification number or face a fine of up to $807.58;

3 Jan 2023 Dar es Salaam (Tanzania) Reuters. President Samia Suluhu Hassan lifts a ban on political rallies, six years after former president John Magufuli imposed the measure;

2 Jan 2023 Addis Ababa (Ethiopia) Borkena. National air carrier Ethiopian Airlines resumes daily flights to Shire Indaselassie (Tigray region);

2 Jan 2023 Addis Ababa (Ethiopia) Borkena. National Electoral Board of Ethiopia (NEBE) announces the cancellation of voter registration at 24 stations in WolaytaGofa and Gamo provinces due to a ‘breach of basic rules’;

2 Jan 2023 Kampala (Uganda) BBC. Police arrest a high-profile event’s organiser following a crush incident at a new year concert which killed 10 at the Freedom City Mall in Kampala;

30 Dec 2022 Kinshasa (DRC) The North Africa Post. South Sudan dispatches 750 soldiers to join the East African Regional Force (EARF) operating as a peacekeeping force in eastern DRC;

30 Dec 2022 Nairobi (Kenya) Reuters. Kenya National Bureau of Statistics(KNBS)announces that economic growth slowed to 4.7% year-on-year in Q3 2022, down from 9.3% in Q3 2021;

30 Dec 2022 Kampala (Uganda) Zawya. Treasury secretary Ramathan Ggoobi commits to expanding Uganda’s tax base rather than introducing new taxes;

30 Dec 2022 Kampala (Uganda) VOA. Police deploy tear gas and arrest more than 30 opposition supporters attending a prayer rally organized by opposition leader Bobi Wine;

29 Dec 2022 Nairobi (Kenya) North Africa Post. National airline Kenya Airways reportedly owes $37.5m to the Kenya Airports Authority (KAA) as of 30 June 2022;

29 Dec 2022 Dar es Salaam (Tanzania) Tanzania Daily News. Oryx Gas Tanzania Ltd, the investment group subsidiary of Switzerland-based AOG launches a programme to train consumers and communities on the safe use of Liquified Petroleum Gas (LPG);

29 Dec 2022 Kampala (Uganda) Reuters. Central Bank of Uganda (CBU) publish a report cautioning that public debt service payments will likely place pressure on liquidity and domestic revenues;

28 Dec 2022 Addis Ababa (Ethiopia) BBC. Commercial flights between Addis Ababa and Mek’ele resume;

28 Dec 2022 Kampala (Uganda) Zawya. Uganda and DRC commit to undertake a $200m feasibility study to construct an electricity transmission line from the Nkenda substation (Uganda) in Kasese (eastern DRC);

27 Dec 2022 Kampala (Uganda) Anadolu Agency. Floods kill 10 and displace 400 families in Rakai and Lyantonde districts (southern Uganda);

26 Dec 2022 Kinshasa (DRC) The North Africa Post. National electoral agency the Commission Electorale Nationale Indépendante (CENI) begins the process of registering voters ahead of the 2023 general elections;

26 Dec 2022 Dar es Salaam (Tanzania) Clean Technica. Tanzania begins to fill the 2,155 megawatts (MW) Julius Nyerere Dam;

25 Dec 2022 Dar es Salaam (Tanzania) The East African. China-headquartered firms China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CCECC) and China Railway Construction Company (CRCC) sign a deal to complete the final 506km phase of Tanzania’s standard gauge railway (SGR) linking Dar es Salaam to Burundi and the DRC;

23 Dec 2022 Kinshasa (DRC) Al Jazeera. M23 rebel group issues a statement declaring its intention to withdraw from Kibumba 19 km outside of Goma as a gesture of goodwill following peace talks in Luanda (Angola);

22 Dec 2022 Kinshasa (DRC) VOA. United Nations (UN) report on the conflict in eastern DRC indicates the involvement of the Rwandan military in supporting the M23 rebel group in military operations and supplying weapons, ammunition, and uniforms;

22 Dec 2022 Addis Ababa (Ethiopia) Garowe Online. US congressman Brad Sherman urges secretary of state Antony Blinken to withhold a loan to Ethiopian national air carrier Ethiopian Airlines until government meet standards established in a peace agreement signed between government and Tigray rebels;

22 Dec 2022 Nairobi (Kenya) Reuters. Finance ministry announces its intention to seek $900m in external commercial financing for the remaining six months of the financial year;

22 Dec 2022 Nairobi (Kenya) Al JazeeraAl-Shabaab militants attack a police vehicle travelling to Garissa (Garissa county) killing two and injuring others with an explosive device and rocket-propelled grenade launcher and gunfire;

21 Dec 2022 Kinshasa (DRC) Deutsche Welle. UN Security Council (UNSC) eases an arms embargo imposed on DRC in 2003, removing a requirement to notify the UNSC of arms sales or military support to DRC, in an attempt to ease the worsening security situation in eastern DRC;

21 Dec 2022 Addis Ababa (Ethiopia) Borkena. Government officials secure the release of six Djibouti military personnel held hostage by the Front for the Restoration of Unity and Democracy (FRUD) rebel group;

21 Dec 2022 Addis Ababa (Ethiopia) EBC. State media outlet EBC reports on a ‘clandestine cement trading network’ operating in Addis Ababa selling at prices that exceed the nationwide cap of $112 per tonne and intentionally creating shortages of the product;
