25 Jun 2024 Bujumbura (Burundi) Anadolu Agency. Local media report a military court has sentenced up to 270 soldiers to jail terms ranging between 22 and 30 years for refusing to fight rebels in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC);

25 Jun 2024 Kinshasa (DRC) AFP. United Nations peacekeeping mission closes its main office in South Kivu province as it continues to withdraw its peacekeepers;

25 Jun 2024 Asmara (Eritrea) Zawya. A senior delegation of Italian businessmen, led by Italy’s enterprises minister, Adolfo Urso, arrives in Eritrea to visit various development sites;

25 Jun 2024 Nairobi (Kenya) Financial Times. Addressing the nation, President William Ruto says Kenya experienced an “unprecedented attack on its democracy” after protestors demonstrating against proposed tax increases stormed parliament;

25 Jun 2024 Nairobi (Kenya) Al Jazeera. Police fire live rounds at protestors trying to storm parliament, killing at least five people;

25 Jun 2024 Nairobi (Kenya) Reuters. The first police officers assigned to the international force Kenya is leading in Haiti arrive in the country;

25 Jun 2024 Dar es Salaam (Tanzania) Daily News. Shares of Australia-headquartered exploration and mining company Gladiator Resources, with a focus on uranium, were up nearly 12% yesterday after the explorer revealed it had uncovered two “highly mineralised” intervals during drilling at its Mkuju Project in the Ruvuma region;

25 Jun 2024 Kampala (Uganda) Monitor. Energy ministry announces it is set to start generating electricity from four geothermal sites out of the 27 identified sites, as they are now ready;

24 Jun 2024 Addis Ababa (Ethiopia) Addis Standard. United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) publishes its latest World Investment Report, revealing that Ethiopia secured $3.3 billion in foreign direct investment (FDI) in 2023, making it the top FDI destination in East Africa;

24 Jun 2024 Kigali (Rwanda) AFP. Rwanda Broadcasting Agency confirms one person was killed during a stampede at President Paul Kagame’s campaign rally;

24 Jun 2024 Kigali (Rwanda) Africanews. Presidential campaigning begins ahead of the 15 July election;

23 Jun 2024 Nairobi (Kenya) Reuters. Protestors against the Finance Bill 2024 heckle President William Ruto and other government officials attending a church event;

22 Jun 2024 Kinshasa (DRC) Reuters. Local authorities say armed rebel group, the Cooperative for the Development of Congo (CODECO), killed at least 23 people in attacks on several villages across Ituri province in two days;

21 Jun 2024 Kigali (Rwanda) Africa Confidential. United States-based Media Forensics Hub suggests that backers of the ruling government are using banned artificial intelligence tools to promote the government’s projects and policies on social media platform X while flooding X with attacks on critics ahead of the 15 July presidential election;

21 Jun 2024 Juba (South Sudan) Radio Tamazuj. Government asks Burundian and Ethiopian refugees to return to their home countries as it grapples with a refugee crisis;

21 Jun 2024 Dar es Salaam (Tanzania) IPP Media. Guinea-Bissau’s President Umaro Mokhtar Sissoco Embaló is expected to arrive in the country for a two-day working visit and is scheduled to hold formal talks with counterpart Samia Suluhu Hassan;

20 Jun 2024 Djibouti (Djibouti) Garowe Online. Somalia’s candidate for the African Union Commission (AUC) chairmanship position, Fawzia Yusuf Adam, says she has been pressured to withdraw from the race in favour of Djibouti’s candidate, foreign minister Mohamud Yusuf, without elaborating why;

20 Jun 2024 Asmara (Eritrea) VOA News. United Nations (UN) special rapporteur on human rights in Ethiopia, Mohamed Abdelsalam Babiker, tells the UN Security Council that the human rights situation in Eritrea remains dire with patterns of gross human rights violations persisting;

20 Jun 2024 Nairobi (Kenya) BBC. Demonstrations continue across the country against the Finance Bill 2024 which parliament is debating;

20 Jun 2024 Kigali (Rwanda) France24. President Paul Kagame says in an interview with France24 that Rwanda is “ready” to go to war with Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) as tensions between the countries persist;

20 Jun 2024 Dar es Salaam (Tanzania) Reuters. International Monetary Fund (IMF) executive board approves a total of $935.6m in funding for Tanzania;
