8 Oct 2024 Addis Ababa (Ethiopia) Reuters. United Nations (UN) is reportedly considering suspending relief operations in Amhara Region following deadly attacks on humanitarian workers;

8 Oct 2024 Nairobi (Kenya) Africanews. An overwhelming majority – 281 members of parliament (MPs) –vote to impeach vice president Rigathi Gachagua, moving the motion onto the Senate;

8 Oct 2024 Dar es Salaam (Tanzania) Reuters. Norway-headquartered Equinor senior vice president Nina Koch says the company remains committed to the $42 billion liquefied natural gas (LNG) project in Tanzania that has stalled after proposed government changes to a financial agreement reached last year;

8 Oct 2024 Dar es Salaam (Tanzania) IPP Media. The Bank of Tanzania (BoT) (central bank) has purchased at least 7 kilograms of gold from small-scale, medium-scale, and large-scale miners between 1 and 4 October as part of its initiative to bolster the country’s foreign exchange reserves;

8 Oct 2024 Kampala (Uganda) The East African. Bank of Uganda (central bank) cuts its benchmark policy rate by 0.25% to 9.75% as inflationary pressures continue to ease;

7 Oct 2024 Bujumbura (Burundi) ItWeb. Burundi and Zambia sign a memorandum of understanding (MoU) for an undersea cable to connect the two countries;

7 Oct 2024 Bujumbura (Burundi) iAfrica.com. European Union (EU) in partnership with Tanzania and United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees launches an $8.8m initiative to address the ongoing Burundian refugee crisis;

7 Oct 2024 Addis Ababa (Ethiopia) Africanews. Parliament approves the appointment of foreign minister Taye Astike Selassie as the country’s new president – a largely ceremonial role – replacing Sahle-Work Zwede whose term ends later this month;

7 Oct 2024 Nairobi (Kenya) Bloomberg. Vice president Rigathi Gachagua confirms he will appear in the National Assembly on 8 October to defend himself in an impeachment process over allegations he violated the constitution and refused to quit;

6 Oct 2024 Nairobi (Kenya) The East African. Central Bank of Kenya (CBK) data show foreigners’ portfolio investments in Kenya have increased by 121%, from $49.5m in June 2023 to $233.4m in June 2024;

6 Oct 2024 Kigali (Rwanda) Al Jazeera. Health minister Sabin Nsanzimana launches a trial for a vaccine for the Marburg virus in a bid to combat an outbreak of the disease in the country;

5 Oct 2024 Kinshasa (DRC) France24. DRC launches an mpox vaccination campaign from 7 October, vaccinating hospital staff and opening up vaccines to members of the public who are most at risk;

5 Oct 2024 Kigali (Rwanda) Reuters. Foreign minister Olivier Nduhungirehe says the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) refused to sign an agreement to help resolve the M23 conflict in eastern DRC:

4 Oct 2024 Bujumbura (Burundi) Voice of Nigeria. Burundi calls on Nigerian investors to explore opportunities in Burundi;

4 Oct 2024 Djibouti (Djibouti) Africanews. Coastguard confirms it is still searching for dozens of migrants still missing after smugglers allegedly forced them off two boats in the Red Sea off the coast of Djibouti;

4 Oct 2024 Dar es Salaam (Tanzania) Bloomberg. Tanzania is in talks with India’s Adani Group for a $900m public-private partnership project to construct high-voltage power lines in Tanzania;

4 Oct 2024 Kampala (Uganda) VOA. Chief of the defence forces, General Muhoozi Kainerugaba, tells United States (US) ambassador to Uganda William Popp he has until 7 October to apologise for reportedly disrespecting President Yoweri Museveni and undermining the constitution, or leave the country;

3 Oct 2024 Addis Ababa (Ethiopia) CNBC Africa. Bondholders reject the outlines of a government debt restructuring proposal for Ethiopia’s $1-billion bond;

3 Oct 2024 Nairobi (Kenya) Reuters. International Monetary Fund (IMF) confirms Kenya has asked it to conduct an official assessment of corruption and governance issues after a push from Western nations;

3 Oct 2024 Dar es Salaam (Tanzania) IPP. The Bank of Tanzania (BoT) (central bank)’s Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) maintains the central bank rate (CBR) unchanged at 6% for the quarter ending December 2024;

3 Oct 2024 Dar es Salaam (Tanzania) The Citizen. Local publication The Citizen announces that it is ceasing publication across all its online media platforms with immediate effect due to the Tanzania Communications Regulatory Authority (TCRA) suspending all its online media services licences for 30 days, citing publication of prohibited content, particularly a widely circulated video that raised concerns about abductions and disappearances in Tanzania;
