7 Aug 2024 Kinshasa (DRC) Nation. The ceasefire negotiated in Luanda (Angola) between Rwanda and the DRC appears to have collapsed before it could take effect, following an outbreak of violence between the warring parties;

7 Aug 2024 Dar es Salaam (Tanzania) Amnesty International. Global human rights group Amnesty Internationalreports that since 2009, private businesses have been complicit in forced evictions of Maasai indigenous communities from their ancestral lands in Loliondo (Ngorongoro district) by Tanzanian authorities;

6 Aug 2024 Abuja (NigeriaNews24. Police spokesman Olumuyiwa Adejobi says authorities have detained more than 90 protestors in northern Nigeria carrying Russian flags as protests triggered by economic hardship entered a sixth day, with Russia’s embassy to Nigeria in a statement on its website on 5 August denying involvement;

6 Aug 2024 Addis Ababa (Ethiopia) Africa News. South African police report that they rescued 90 Ethiopian migrants who were being held against their will at a property in Johannesburg;

6 Aug 2024 Dakar (Senegal) Arab News. Saudi Arabia’s King Salman receives a written message from Senegal’s President Bassirou Diomaye Faye, related to relations between the two countries;

6 Aug 2024 Harare (Zimbabwe) Bloomberg. Information minister Jenfan Muswere says the cabinet has approved a roadmap to abandon United States dollars in favour of its gold-backed currency in transactions, a strategy that finance minister Mthuli Ncube may unveil next week;

6 Aug 2024 Johannesburg (South Africa) Bloomberg. Local media report that South African municipalities owe national energy utility Eskom Holdings a total of R82.3 billion ($4.5 billion) in arrears, which the embattled state power utility is struggling to collect;

6 Aug 2024 Johannesburg (South Africa) Bloomberg. Water and sanitation minister Pemmy Majodina says municipalities owe South Africa’s 15 water boards R21.3 billion ($1.2 billion) and the debt threatens water boards’ financial viability;

6 Aug 2024 Luanda (Angola) World Fertiliser. The African Export-Import Bank (AEIB) and state-owned fertiliser company Amufert SA announce they have signed terms for a $1.4 billion facility to support the establishment of a fertiliser plant in Angola;

6 Aug 2024 Maputo (Mozambique) Club of Mozambique. The government approves a resolution on the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) and the national strategy for its implementation;

6 Aug 2024 Nairobi (Kenya) Business Daily. Central Bank of Kenya (CBK) cuts its policy lending rate to 12.75% from 13%, the first cut since early 2020, surprising financial markets;
