2 Jul 2024 Asmara (Eritrea) HRW. United States-headquartered Human Rights Watch says the United Nations (UN) should ensure continued scrutiny of the human rights situation in Eritrea and extend the mandate of the special rapporteur;

2 Jul 2024 Addis Ababa (Ethiopia) APA News. Foreign affairs minister Taye Aske Selassie and his Somali counterpart, Ahmed Moalim Fiqi, sign an agreement to meet again after the current round of mediation talks, facilitated by Turkey, over Ethiopia’s port deal with Somaliland;

1 Jul 2024 Kinshasa (DRC) Mining Weekly. State-owned miner Gecamines says it has rejected the sale of cobalt miner Chemaf and its Congolese assets, which it leases from Gecamines, to China’s Norin Mining;

1 Jul 2024 Asmara (Eritrea) BBC. Eritreans report to the BBC that family members, registered as refugees in Sudan, have gone missing and are reportedly being held by the Sudanese military;

30 Jun 2024 Addis Ababa (Ethiopia) Business Insider Africa. Ethiopia and South Sudan commit to a $738m cross-border road that will increase connectivity and enhance economic ties;

30 Jun 2024 Nairobi (Kenya) Bloomberg. President William Ruto defends his decision to deploy the military to suppress protests last week that left at least 24 people dead;

30 Jun 2024 Dar es Salaam (Tanzania) Daily News. The ruling Chama Cha Mapinduzi’s (CCM) National Executive Committee (NEC) expresses its satisfaction with the implementation of the election manifesto (2020-25) by both the mainland and Zanzibar governments;

29 Jun 2024 Kanyabayonga (DRC) Jeune Afrique. Administrative officials confirm M23 rebels seized Kanyabayonga town, located approximately 100km from North Kivu provincial capital Goma;

29 Jun 2024 Addis Ababa (Ethiopia) APA News. Ethiopian Airlines reportedly terminates its discussions with the Nigerian government to establish a joint venture airline, Nigeria Air, due to the Nigerian government’s loss of interest in partnering with a foreign airline;

29 Jun 2024 Nairobi (Kenya) AFP. United States-headquartered Human Rights Watch (HRW) says at least 30 people died in protests last week over the Finance Bill 2024, adding that security forces shot directly into crowds;

29 Jun 2024 Dar es Salaam (Tanzania) The Citizen. Tanzania confirms it will sell 650,000 tonnes of corn to Zambia, which is facing a severe El-Nino induced drought;

27 Jun 2024 Bujumbura (Burundi) AFP. The supreme court upholds the life sentence handed to former prime minister Alain-Guillaume Bunyoni for charges including destabilising the economy and illegal enrichment;

27 Jun 2024 Djibouti (Djibouti) Freight News. Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC) is considering withdrawing its vessels serving trade lines that call at ports in the Horn of Africa due to ongoing Houthi rebel attacks on maritime traffic;

27 Jun 2024 Kinshasa (DRC) AFP. Angola says President Felix Tshisekedi and his Rwandan counterpart, Paul Kagame, may meet “very soon” for talks amid increased unrest in eastern DRC;

27 Jun 2024 Addis Ababa (Ethiopia) APA News. Foreign affairs ministry spokesperson Nebiyou Tedala denies accusations that Ethiopian forces crossed into Somalia in pursuit of al-Shabaab militants;

27 Jun 2024 Addis Ababa (Ethiopia) Africa Confidential. Diplomatic sources report that a top-level meeting between Somalia’s President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud and prime minister Abiy Ahmed will take place in Turkey on 30 June to break the impasse caused by Ethiopia’s Red Sea access deal with Somaliland;

27 Jun 2024 Nairobi (Kenya) SF Group. Police fire tear gas to disperse protestors as demonstrations continue across the capital despite President William Ruto pulling the controversial finance bill;

27 Jun 2024 Dar es Salaam (Tanzania) Daily News. The International Monetary Fund (IMF) says Tanzania’s economic growth is projected to rebound to about 6.5% over the medium term, assuming successful implementation of the authorities’ reform agenda;
