21 Feb 2024 Nairobi (Kenya) The East African. Energy generating company KenGen managing director Peter Njenga says KenGen will soon sign a contract to drill three explorative wells in Tanzania as the country seeks to plug into geothermal energy and KenGen aims to cement its revenue diversification by venturing into markets outside Kenya;

20 Feb 2024 Djibouti (Djibouti) Reuters. United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations says a vessel sustained superficial damage after being hit by a drone in the Red Sea, 60 nautical miles north of Djibouti;

20 Feb 2024 Kinshasa (DRC) The East African. State-owned miner Gecamines says it is seeking to negotiate higher stakes from copper and cobalt joint ventures while leveraging existing shareholding in mines to negotiate off-take contracts as it works to overhaul contracts that are not deemed favourable;

20 Feb 2024 Addis Ababa (Ethiopia) Reuters. Prime minister Abiy Ahmed says the government is discussing selling a 10% stake in Ethio Telecom via the Ethiopian Securities Exchange (ESX);

20 Feb 2024 Nairobi (Kenya) The East African. Treasury reports that public debt increased to $13.3 billion in the year ended December 2023, bringing Kenya’s indebtedness levels to a new high of $76.83 billion;

20 Feb 2024 Kigali (Rwanda) France24. France calls on Rwanda to end “all support” for M23 rebels in eastern Democratic Republic Congo (DRC) and to remove any soldiers from the country;

20 Feb 2024 Dar es Salaam (Tanzania) The Citizen. African Development Bank (AfDB) projects that Tanzaniaʼs economy will grow by 6.1% this year, ahead of its East African peers, except Rwanda, which will grow by 7.2%;

19 Feb 2024 Bujumbura (Burundi) The Citizen. Burundi officially joins the Southern African Development Community (SADC) Mission in Democratic Republic of Congo (SAMIDRC) deployed in eastern DRC;

19 Feb 2024 Addis Ababa (Ethiopia) ENA. Finance ministry and Arab Bank for Economic Development in Africa sign a $49.5m financing agreement;

19 Feb 2024 Nairobi (Kenya) Business Daily. Trade numbers indicate that imports from Tanzania fell by KSh10.23 billion ($70.79m) off the back of renewed trade barriers and tensions;

19 Feb 2024 Kigali (Rwanda) AFP. President Paul Kagame says Rwanda is securing its airspace in the face of threats of attacks from the Democratic Republic of Congo and Burundi and to degrade their offensive air capabilities;

19 Feb 2024 Kigali (Rwanda) EU. European Union and Rwanda sign a memorandum of understanding (MoU) on sustainable raw materials value chains;

19 Feb 2024 Dar es Salaam (Tanzania) Daily News. Tanzanian and Egyptian officials meet to discuss cooperation and opportunities in the transport sector;

19 Feb 2024 Kampala (Uganda) APA News. Uganda and Rwanda agree to enhance parliamentary cooperation;

18 Feb 2024 Kinshasa (DRC) Al Jazeera. United States (US) condemns the growing violence in DRC, while condemning Rwanda for supporting the drivers of the violence, the M23 rebels, calling on Rwanda to withdraw all Rwanda Defense Force personnel and its surface-to-air missile systems, which the US says threatens lives;

18 Feb 2024 Addis Ababa (Ethiopia) BBC. African Union (AU) unveils a statue at its headquarters in Addis Ababa (Ethiopia) to honour former Tanzanian president Mwalimu Julius Nyerere‘s contribution to Africa’s liberation struggles;

18 Feb 2024 The Hague (The Netherlands) Sky News. Riots break out between two rival groups of Eritreans, those loyal to the government and those are who are not, in The Hague, with police firing tear gas at the groups that burned police cars and a bus;

18 Feb 2024 Kampala (Uganda) Nation. Authorities deny claims circulating on social media that Uganda is backing M23 rebels in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC);

17 Feb 2024 Goma (DRC) La Prosperité. DRC accuses Rwanda of carrying out a drone attack that damaged a civilian aircraft at the Goma airport;

17 Feb 2024 Addis Ababa (Ethiopia) Al Jazeera. Somalia’s President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud accuses Ethiopia of trying to annex a part of the country’s territory through its Red Sea deal with Somaliland;

17 Feb 2024 Nairobi (Kenya) The East African. Economic Intelligence Unit’s latest Democracy Index 2023 reports that Kenya, Burundi and Uganda have failed to improve on governance and democratic values for the last three years, causing an erosion of trust in political elites;

16 Feb 2024 Addis Ababa (Ethiopia) Daily News. Tanzania has been re-elected as a member of the African Union Peace and Security Council (AUPSC) with a two-year mandate effective 1 April 2024;

15 Feb 2024 Kinshasa (DRC) Al Jazeera. Rebel group CODECO kills at least 12 people and kidnaps 16 others at a gold mine near Djugu district in Ituri province;

15 Feb 2024 Addis Ababa (Ethiopia) Africanews. Government dismisses allegations that soldiers massacred a group of civilians last month as Western nations, including the United States and the United Kingdom, call for investigations;

15 Feb 2024 Mtwara (Tanzania) Energy Capital Power. State-owned Tanzania Petroleum Development Corporation (TPDC) acquires a 20% additional stake in the Mnazi Bay natural gas project in the Mtwara region in a deal worth $23.6m, bringing the TPDC’s total share in the project to 40%;
