30 May 2023 Addis Ababa (Ethiopia) Borkena. Ethiopian Petroleum Supply Enterprise says $4.4 billion is needed to procure 4.3 million metric tons of gas in the upcoming budget year;

30 May 2023 Dar es Salaam (Tanzania) The Citizen. Home affairs minister Hamad Masauni says Tanzania is consulting United States-based Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation on the possibility of establishing a Universal National Identification Card (ID) in order to integrate the national ID card with other IDs and cut government costs in purchasing raw cards and printing IDs;

30 May 2023 Kampala (Uganda) Neue Zürcher Zeitung. Human rights activists gather outside the Constitutional Court in Kampala to protest President Yoweri Museveni‘s signing of the new anti-LGBTQ law, which allows the death penalty for homosexuals;

29 May 2023 Victoria (Seychelles) Seychelles News Agency. The Seychelles’ Public Utilities Corporation (PUC) and the Department of Energy are assessing prospective government buildings to install photovoltaic panels among steps to achieve 15% renewable penetration by 2030 and the greater vision of hitting net-zero emissions by 2050;

29 May 2023 Dar es Salaam (Tanzania) The Citizen. The government provides details on development projects that will be implemented under public-private partnerships, including a 50-km bridge connecting mainland Tanzania and Zanzibar to facilitate movement of goods and people, as well as a 205-km expressway between Kibaha and Morogoro;

29 May 2023 Kampala (Uganda) Al JazeeraUnited States (US) state secretary Antony Blinken says the US may consider restricting visas for some Ugandan officials after the country adopted one of the world’s toughest anti-LGBTQ laws, with US President Joe Biden condemning the law as “a tragic violation of universal human rights” and threatening to cut aid and investment to Uganda;

28 May 2023 Dar es Salaam (Tanzania) The Citizen. Government officials meet in Zanzibar over budget preparations between senior officials from the finance ministries for mainland Tanzania and Zanzibar to discuss issues such as taxation, policy and the general economy;

28 May 2023 Kampala (Uganda) Swiss Info. President Yoweri Museveni reports casualties during an attack by Somalia‘s Islamist group al Shabaab on a military base manned by Ugandan peacekeepers in Somalia, in the first official admission of losses among Ugandan troops serving in the African Union Transition Mission in Somalia;

27 May 2023 Addis Ababa (Ethiopia) BorkenaUnited States (US) Embassy in Addis Ababa hands over vehicles donated by the US Bureau of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement to the Afar Regional Police to support the passage of humanitarian goods and services through the Afar region;

27 May 2023 Victoria (Seychelles) Seychelles News Agency. Members of parliament from Indian Ocean Commission countries hold statutory meetings in Seychelles to validate the Indian Ocean Commission Parliamentary Association (AP-COI) action plan and prepare activities for 2023;

25 May 2023 Dar es Salaam (Tanzania) The Citizen. The Bank of Tanzania (central bank) Monetary Policy Committee says foreign exchange reserves closed at $4.9 billion (about TSh11.7 trillion) at the end of April, almost 11% lower than the $5.5 billion (about TSh13.1 trillion) registered at the end of April 2022;

25 May 2023 Kampala (Uganda) Chimp Reports. Ugandan and Rwandan governments agree to work more closely to continue the standard gauge railway line project connecting Kampala and Kigali;

24 May 2023 Nairobi (Kenya) Reuters. Cybersecurity research reports and Reuters’ analysis of technical data show that Chinese hackers have targeted Kenya’s government in a widespread, years-long series of digital intrusions against key ministries and state institutions;

24 May 2023 Dar es Salaam (Tanzania) The Citizen. Defence minister Innocent Bashungwa says Tanzania’s borders on land and water are safe despite hostility and threats from neighboring countries, such as the borders with Uganda and Kenya, which are threatened with illegal immigrants;

24 May 2023 Kampala (Uganda) The East AfricanUganda Nurses and Midwives Union president Justus Cherop announces engagements are underway to send some of the 3,000 skilled nurses who are not employed by the government to work abroad, including in the United Kingdom and the Middle East;
