27 Jul 2022 Bujumbura (Burundi) The EastAfrican. Burundian human rights group claims Burundi government has secretly sent hundreds of troops and members of a youth militia into neighbouring DRC since the end of 2021 to fight an armed rebel group;

27 Jul 2022 Addis Ababa (Ethiopia) CNBC Africa. Russian foreign minister Sergei Lavrov says Moscow supports Ethiopia’s efforts to stabilise its internal political situation in remarks that sought to draw a contrast with what he presented as meddling by the West;

27 Jul 2022 Nairobi (Kenya) Daily Nation. Deputy president William Ruto appears solo in live televised presidential campaign event after his main opponent, Raila Odinga, refused to participate;

26 Jul 2022 (East Africa) The EastAfrican. East Africa’s growing competition for foreign capital inflows opens up regional stock markets to more international investors risking their day-to-day operations;

26 Jul 2022 Dar es Salaam (Tanzania) The Citizen. Tanzania introduces a gaming tax on the amount or value of winnings through casinos and sports betting, tightening the noose on gamblers already squeezed by levies in neighbouring Kenya and Uganda;

25 Jul 2022 Nairobi (Kenya) Daily Star. Foreign exchange reserves drop below the set threshold of 4.5 months of import cover, exposing the country to high volatilities in the global market;

25 Jul 2022 Kigali (Rwanda) News24. United States Senate committee on foreign relations calls for a “more effective US policy” on Rwanda due to human right and political concerns;

25 Jul 2022 Komoro (Madagascar) OCCRP. Madagascar authorities suspend four illegal gold mining operations that were run by Chinese nationals in the northwest of the country;

25 Jul 2022 Kampala (Uganda) Daily Monitor. Protests against the rising cost of living barricade the streets in Jinja, a major centre on the busy highway to the country’s border with Kenya;

25 Jul 2022 Kampala (Uganda) Daily Monitor. President Yoweri Museveni meets Russian foreign minister Sergei Lavrov, where they discuss rising fuel and food costs;

23 Jul 2022 Kampala (Uganda) The East African. President Yoweri Museveni names opposition Democratic Party leader Norbert Mao as minister for justice and constitutional affairs;

21 Jul 2022 Bujumbura (Burundi) IMF. IMF concludes the 2022 Article IV consultation with Burundi, forecasting growth at 3.3% in 2022, slightly strengthening from 3.1% in 2021, and average about 4.7% over 2023-27;

22 Jul 2022 Nairobi (Kenya) Daily Nation. Electoral Commission says police have arrested three contractors working for the electoral commission when they landed at the country’s main airport in Nairobi, for not declaring sensitive election-related stickers;

20 Jul 2022 Nairobi (Kenya) Reuters. Deputy president and presidential aspirant William Ruto says he will publish government contracts with China and deport Chinese nationals working illegally if he is elected on 9 August.
